Toodyay
We left Hydern and wave rock, after breakfast yesterday, creeping slowly further north.
We continued to drive though the Western Australia wheat belt., Field after field of wheat stubble, occasionally we passed towns where they have the storage areas, which is quite interesting, they have like a large football field with a solid metal perimeter, they seem to have a base of heavy plastic then the grain and it is all covered by heavy weight plastic again. Waiting for the fleets of trucks or trains to transport the grain to the nearest port for export.
As we drove along we noticed signs for the Corrigan Dog cemetery ,intrigued and needing a break from the drive we decided to pull in.
Located 5 kms west of the township of Corrigan the cemetery is the ultimate tribute to man’s best friend, with over 200 dogs ,and a few cats currently buried there
it was heart warming to see that these gorgeous creatures that bring us such comfort and love are respected enough to have their own burial place.
More wheatfields , as far as the eye can see.
We arrived around midday to the township of Toodyay pronounced Too Jay
Toodyay is a small historic town located on the banks of the Avon river, about 85kms north east of Perth.
The original settlement of Toodyay was in 1836 and at that time it was called Duidgee (meaning place of plenty) between 1860 and 1910 it was known as Newcastle, however due to ongoing confusion between this town and the NSW town of Newcastle (our home) the name was changed to Toodyay.
The heritage council lists over 100 places in the Toodyay area as of historical significance, including the Newcastle goal, cottages, homesteads, shops and churches. Toodyay was also well known for its own bushranger Moondyne Joe, who was notorious for many petty thefts but mainly for managing to escape prison multiple times. It was a really town and the people were really friendly, we picked up a few locally made items to enjoy
We had a lovely evening meal at the Victoria Hotel (above). We stayed overnight at the Toodyay caravan park , the staff there were super helpful , accomodating us after a last minute call. The park itself is really quite well cared for with lovely gardens everywhere.
Until the next blog
