Kakadu: Jim Jim falls tour

On our last full day in Kakadu we did a tour with

Never Never safari tours

Jody picked us up at the Cooinda bus stop, in her silver 4WD

In a flanno shirt, shorts , crocs and socks, her “winter uniform”

Jody was just so high spirited and bubbly, i knew we were in for a fun day.

The road out to Jim Jim falls is 50kms roughly of very corrugated road, which Jody navigated really well, she was very knowledgeable about the road, where the worst parts

We met Jody’s dad Chiso and his 4WD full of passengers at the Garnamarr    Campground(above), on board with Chiso was Peter Keepence a well known photographer in the area. Peter was on the trip to take photos for a promotional campaign for Chiso and Jody’s business.

We parked at the Jim Jim falls car park and hiked the last 1km into the falls.

Initially the track was quite easy to walk, but it became progressively harder as we went along. For the last few hundred metres we had to do quite a bit of rock hopping. It wasn’t easy but I managed to achieve it  and I’m not the fittest person and gadget feels  m a bit unco-ordinated.

When we reached the end , this was our spectacular view. Jody and Chiso explained that usually by the time Jim Jim falls is opened  after the wet season there is often vey little water flowing over the escarpment , and the only way to  see them flowing is by helicopter at the very beginning of the dry season or the end of the wet season.

The water was absolutely crystal clear and was a bit cool, we had just over an hour here to enjoy this beautiful tranquil place. I didn’t swim as such, but did wander in up to my knees.

This cheeky bird was hanging around the whole time we were there.on arrival, Chiso opened up his soft esky and shared with us some fruit that he had pre prepared for us , the bird did a couple of attempts to steal some fruit ,but Chiso was pretty aware of the bird and made sure the lid was closed all the time. We were advised to make sure our backpacks were closed up securely, because he was known to get into bags. Sure enough there were others at the waterhole who hadn’t been forewarned , and we seen the bird pulling things out of the bag until he found a meusli bar , which he stole.

We returned to Garnamarr for our lunch. Chiso and Jody put on a great lunch for us ,BBQ chicken, potato salad, lettuce, tomato, cucumber cheese tea and coffee and juice.

Chiso said to us as we started that he’d put a little croc in our potato salad. As we were eating it i kept thinking I can’t taste anything different ,it wasn’t until i went back for an extra helping that we discovered a little plastic croc in the salad.

We had a great day , Chiso and Jody were so funny and full of information i would absolutely recommend doing a tour with them.

Until the next blog
