Yardie creek, Ningaloo reef , Exmouth

We arrived in Exmouth on Saturday morning, we did a quick restock shop

And headed out to our campsite.

All along the road to Exmouth we seen these termite mounds and they are also around the national park area here as well. Termite mounds can be hundred of years old and play an important role in their surrounding ecosystem. They are often homes to snakes and lizards. The termites also break down natural plant fibres, assisting with the breakdown of vegetation. They provide food for smaller creatures , which in then provide food for larger animals and birds of prey

As you can see by the map above we are on the opposite side of the peninsula from Exmouth. All along this side of the peninsula is the Ningaloo reef , home to a diverse population of coral, fish and sea life , including whale sharks, which we will get a chance to swim with later this week.

The national park that we are closest to is the Cape Range National park, which is part of the Ningaloo Coast World Heritage area

All along the edge of the coast is a series of bays and beaches all providing access to the reef

Some bays you can fish at , others are part of the reserve and no fishing is allowed.

All of the beaches are protected from the Indian Ocean by the outer reef. There are several National park camp areas all along the coast, but they are very popular and often book out 6 months in advance.

The abundance of Coral we found on one beach is testimony to the abundance of coral out on the reef.

This is our place of residence for the next week, as we decided it was time to have a rest and stay put for a while, we also wanted the opportunity to snorkel on the reef. Probably our nay chance to swim in the ocean as the further we travel north , the more chance of swimming with crocodiles.

The beautiful limestone ranges that form the Cape Range national Park, are the backdrop  for the Yardie Creek Homestead camp grounds.

On our first night we were treated to some live music , all we had to do was provide our own chairs , beverages and snacks . Although it is possible to purchase a meal at the cafe on site and even a variety of ice creams.

As we don’t have huge plans here i will update the blog when we have things to share.

Gadget is going to try his hand at fishing  tomorrow and I’m going to do some housework and baking.

Until the next blog

Travel safe
