El Questro: Amaroo Gorge, sunsets, and horse rides
Whilst we were at El Questro
Gadget booked us in to do a couple of my favourite things to do
The first was a helicopter flight, the second was a horse ride.
Our helicopter flight took us out to Amaroo falls , with some sightseeing on the way
Above is the El Questro gorge
Above is the dusty road into El Questro from the Gibb river road. The pilot said it has a constant cloud of dust due to the amount of traffic moving in and out , and the road gets graded weekly during the high season.
Above is the Amaroo gorge from the air
The Amaroo gorge has three deep water holes for swimming
The one above Gadget had a swim in, i dangled my legs in and honestly the whole time I was there it still felt cold my legs never became accustomed to the cold.
The view from the top of the gorge looking out over the valley, this was a few metres away from the above swimming hole
This was the second swimming hole , it didnt look as deep , but again gadget braved the cold water and assured me it was deep as i watched
This was the third water hole , we both swam in here and yeh it was still cold but i stayed in and i enjoyed it. On the theme of losing stuff , i lost my camera lens cover here. As we were climbing down the rocks on the righ side of the image (it was a bit like a ladder to get down) my camera was hanging on my back and the edge of the rock, popped the cap off and it fell into this deep water hole.
The flight included a packed lunch and a bottle of sparkling wine. So it was pretty romantic just the two of us on the rocks by the swimming pool having lunch and sipping Prosecco.
Most evenings we spent sitting at the El Questro bar area, they had a live musician every night and it was just lovely to wind down here of an afternoon.
But on one lovely evening we watched the sun go down here, at Pigeon hole lookout. We were very very lucky , when we arrived we tried to booking one of these tours and were advised that they only run them a few times a week and they were all full. However on our first day when we did the Emma Gorge tour we met a lovely couple , and both discussed how we would like to do it. I joked that maybe if we pointed out that four of us were keen they might put an extra tour on. The lovely lady that we met approached the admin office and they accepted our suggestion and booked a car and tour guide for us.
We were taken up to Pigeon hole by the lovely, Connie from Melbourne, in an old Toyota with caged seating on the back, like you see on an African safari. It was a lovely evening, again they provided us with Prosecco / beer or soft drink and a yummy cheese platter.
We also jumped at the opportunity to do a horse ride one evening to see the sunset at a different spot (we left before it got really dark)
The ride included going through the Pentecost river , with water filling our boots. The horses were pretty well behaved and it was an easy ride. We stopped at the top of the ridge and again enjoyed a lovely drink and nibbles.
My horse Misty, was very well behaved , except she didn’t like being second last and she also wasn’t too keen on me directing her where to go, which was pretty fair , because she did know the way , but i didnt let her get her own way the whole time. Anyway it was lovely to be on horseback again.
Our final evening had us dining at the steakhouse , where i have to say they cooked a very good steak.
We had a lovely time at El Questro
The facilities were pretty good , the camp sites a bit narrow, with no possibility of having ruby's awning open.
Until the next blog
