Broome: Coconut wells , Malcom’s Douglas croc farm and Broome sunset
Today (19th of June 2024) we did a bit of a self drive tour , our first destination was
Coconut wells,
The coconut wells area is an off grid beachside community just north of Broome. It has several mango farms.
But it is best known for it’s turquoise tidal lagoon and the 100’s of bathsize Rockpools.
That are refilled every high tide all created by the limestone rocky outcrop.
Each little pool is like a little aquarium where you can find crabs , fish and sea slugs. It was a lovely drive and Reggie got to do another sand drive.
After the coconut wells visit we headed to the
Malcolm Douglas Crocodile farm and animal refuge
The Crocodile park was established inn 1983, by the well known conservationist and filmmaker Malcom Douglas.
The croc park is located just north of Broome on a property with several natural lakes and ponds , creating a perfect environment for the crocs both saltwater and freshwater to live as naturally as possible.
The majority of Crocodiles residing in the park have been rescued from the wild due to injuries that would result in the crocodile being unable to survive in the wild.
The largest pond houses 30+ crocodiles that all live in almost perfect harmony, they do occasionally have territorial disputes. The park provides a daily feeding show, however the crocodiles themselves only eat when they want/ need it and rarely eat because its available, we watched as they were fed and seen on several occasions the food landing near the head of a croc, whom just ignored it allowing another croc to come and take the food. There were other crocs located within the park in man made ponds , these crocs are only offered for every 3 to 4 days, which is similar to how they would eat in the wild.
It was a really interesting place and we learned so much about crocodiles and even got o have a cuddle with some baby crocs. The Park also has lots of aviaries filled with native birds as well.
After the Croc park we returned to Broome , in time to ride our little scooter that we had hired down to Cable beach for the sunset
When I was learning to use my DSLR many years ago i remembered my tutorer saying always look behind you . The image above was captured when I looked behind me the little dot you can see in the image is an almost full moon, which was much more impressive in real life
And the sunset it self, what can you say other than it is just spectacular, one of the blessings of holidays is that you actually have the time to enjoy what nature provides naturally and free of charge.
Our only disappointment was that it is a bit of a tradition for the pearl lugger “Willie” that we had cruised in earlier to sail past cable beach on sunset, unfortunately on this evening the Willie remained in its moorings.
We live in a beautiful country.
Until the next Blog
Travel safe, and take time to stop and enjoy what nature provides.
