El Questro - Kunanurra - Lake argyle

Image
We reluctantly left El Questro on the 30th of June, we both really enjoyed being here and we enjoyed just relaxing most afternoons at the bar listening to the live music and chatting with other travellers. Don’t you just love my retro 70s look image, not done on purpose  ,was a total accident. The last time I had taken a picture was during sunset and i had the ISO way up to get the colour anyway it kind of blew out this image a bit Unfortunately i still didn’t realise about the ISO until after this picture.  Anyway we can now officially say that Ruby and Reggie travelled on the Gibb River road. Well the part that leads to El Questro at least. The Victoria Hwy bridge leading into Kununnurra actually doubles up as a diversion dam for Argyle Lake and Lake Kununurra and the western bridge entering the town.  The diversion dam has 20 steel radial gates that can be raised and lowered as desired to ensure that Kununurra doesn’t flood and a constant supply of water is fed downstr...

El Questro: Amaroo Gorge, sunsets, and horse rides

Image
Whilst we were at El Questro  Gadget booked us in to do a couple of my favourite things to do The first was a helicopter flight, the second was a horse ride. Our helicopter flight took us out to Amaroo falls , with some sightseeing on the way Above is the El Questro gorge Above is the dusty road into El Questro from the Gibb river road. The pilot said it has  a constant cloud of dust due to the amount of traffic  moving in and out , and the road gets graded weekly during the high season. Above is the Amaroo gorge from the air The Amaroo gorge has three deep water holes for swimming The one above Gadget had a swim in, i dangled my legs in and honestly the whole time I was there it still felt cold my legs never became accustomed to the cold. The view from the top of the gorge looking out over the valley, this was a few metres away from the above swimming hole This was the second swimming hole , it didnt look as deep , but again gadget braved the cold water and assured me it...

El Questro: Emma Gorge, Zebedee Springs and Chamberlain gorge/river

Image
On our first full day at El Questro we chose to do a tour that provided us with a guide and information about the local area. We started with a bit of a hike into  Emma Gorge Emma gorge is a 1 hr walk over fairly rocky  terrain that rewards you with not one but two water holes The first is turquoise pool  a lovely little pool just a short  5- 7 min walk before Emma Gorge/falls. I had a lovely swim in here , and was told afterwards that a freshwater (Freshie) croc resides in they his pool it seems to be the thing tour guides do up here let you swim then tell you after about the freshies in the pools. After walking back to base camp at Emma gorge  we were provided with a lovely morning tea and a rest. Then loaded  onto the air conditioned 4WD bus and we returned to  El Questro. We stopped off a  Zebedee springs  Zebedee springs is a series of water pools fed by a thermal spring that maintains an almost constant temperature of about 28- 32 degre...

Kununurra: Hot Driving tour

Image
After leaving Broome we did a two day trek to Kunnunurra The first day of driving was actually the longest day we have driven so far. It was definitely not a planned thing we intended to stop at a free camp but soon discovered if you are not in early (by 3pm) there is not a lot of spots left if any. So we pushed on and stayed overnight at a roadhouse. On our first full day in Kunnurra we did a tour with Harvey Outback Tours.  Above: middle springs The tour started with Ian our guide picking us up from the caravan park he took us straight out to Ngamoowalem Conservtion Park. As he drove Ian provided us with a lot of information on the history of the area. He took us to several spots where we could have swum if we wanted to but the water holes were still a bit chilly , well for this chicken anyway. Black Rock falls, which featured in the ABC program Mystery road. When we asked about Mystery road and its filming, Ian was full of stories about how the film crew filmed in  so may d...

Broome: Gantheaume point and a sunset camel ride

Image
We explored Gantheaume point On the 20th of June,  Gantheaume point  is a large stretch of white sandy beach (in the upper foreground in the photo below) where boats are launched and moored and it draws a large crow to enjoy the sunset. Bordered by the red rocky cliffs overlooking the stunning azure Indian ocean , Gantheaume point is the focus of many Broome paintings an images ,due to this amazing colour combination. The promitory of Gantheaume point was the location of the original Broome light house built in 1905 after the lobbying of the owners of the pearl luggers and traders, however the lighthouse ceased requiring a light keeper when it became full automated in the 1920s.  The only remaining part of the original light keepers home is the stone fireplace. The other significant thing about this area is that at low tide you can see one of the best paleontological sites in the world. Preserved in the reef rock for over 125 million years are the footprints of long extin...

Kimberly: Horizontal falls

Image
The 21st of June seen us rising really early We had to meet a tour bus at the front of the van park at 5am For a flight to the Kimberly’ s to see Talbot bay and the Horizontal falls The scenery from the air was just stunning and whilst I can’t tell you the exact location of the above image  it is part of the Buccaneer Archipelago We arrived via seaplane to the Horizontal falls tour pontoon located in Talbot bay. This very large pontoon provides accomodation for  staff and for overnight accomodation for guests. Unfortunately for me as i was exiting the plane, and bending forward my phone slipped out of my pocket and into the bay. Initiallly i had that horrible feeling you get when you’ve lost something valuable and i was mentally beating myself up, but when I stopped and looked around at what was surrounding me I thought to myself i am in one of the most beautiful place i have every been, the phone is replaceable this experience is not, and i just eat it go. The photo above doe...
