The big push : days 2 and 3 on the road

The first few days we had always planned to do as much time on the road as we could, our first day rounded out to about a 6 1/2 hr drive from Underbank ( near dungog NSW) to Forbes.  


we stayed at the Apex Caravan park overnight , as we planned to move on first thing the next day we didn’t unhook Reggie and Ruby (R&R ). This resulted in us not having the opportunity to explore Forbes ,  The caravan park was located on the banks of  Lachlan river  a lovely place to stop with clean amenities. 

Apparently the river bend where the caravan park is located , used to be the local swimming area , with council facilities once available.

 

 loving all the autumn colours as we travel along. 



today we headed off with the destination being Hay and our last sleep in our home state.  The drive from Forbes to Hay was around 4 1/2 hrs . 

 

We travelled along seeing all types of terrain, from the rich red soil Australian is renowned for , fields of solar panels,  cattle  grazing  along the roadside and even an emu.

we stopped  at Rankin springs for a cuppa and a rest, as you can see 

R&R are not so clean and shiny anymore.  




We arrived just after lunch in Hay , we set up R&R for the night, did some washing and headed up the main street for a walk. I have to say I was sad to see the number of empty shops , not something isolated to Hay , but often seen at towns small and large 

I enjoyed the architecture of this lovely old town. 

 

We crossed the mighty Murrumbidgee  , the largest tributary of the Murray river within the Murray -darling basin and Australia's 2nd longest river. 

Hay is located in the western Riverina area is known to be a prosperous , productive area growing various crops on the Hay plains. Again there is so much we would love to see here , I can definitely see a Riverina trip in our future.

Today (19th of June 2024) we did a bit of a self drive tour , our first destination was  Coconut wells,  The coconut wells area is an off grid beachside community just north of Broome.  It has several mango farms. But it is best known for it’s turquoise tidal lagoon and the 100’s of bathsize Rockpools.  That are refilled every high tide all created by the limestone rocky outcrop. Each little pool is like a little aquarium where you can find crabs , fish and sea slugs. It was a lovely drive and Reggie got to do another sand drive. After the coconut wells visit we headed to the  Malcolm Douglas Crocodile farm and animal refuge The Crocodile park was established inn 1983, by the well known conservationist and filmmaker Malcom Douglas. The croc park is located just north of Broome on a property with several natural lakes and ponds , creating a perfect environment for the crocs both saltwater and freshwater to live as naturally as possible. Cape le Grand: Thistle cove and Hellfire Bay

Cape Le grand national Park sits on the lands of the Wudjari people The park covers an area of 31,801. Hectares. The name Cape Le Grand came from one of the officers on L’Esperance one of the ships in the 1792 expedition of Bruni d’Entrecasteaux. ,  On Monday we hiked the beautiful walk from Lucky Bay to Thistle Cove. The hike was a pretty short 4 km round trip  The views were absolutely stunning, and i have to say i have really become much more besotted with the native flora. Thistle Cove is just one of the many beautiful bays located in this area. Thistle Cove was named by Mathew Flinders after the ships master John Thistle However its charm is not just its pristine beach, but also the stunning panorama of the cove. Above is whistling rock , a giant slab standing vertically , as it is curved in shape it amplifies the surrounding noises. El Questro: Emma Gorge, Zebedee Springs and Chamberlain gorge/river

On our first full day at El Questro we chose to do a tour that provided us with a guide and information about the local area. We started with a bit of a hike into  Emma Gorge Emma gorge is a 1 hr walk over fairly rocky  terrain that rewards you with not one but two water holes The first is turquoise pool  a lovely little pool just a short  5- 7 min walk before Emma Gorge/falls. I had a lovely swim in here , and was told afterwards that a freshwater (Freshie) croc resides in they his pool it seems to be the thing tour guides do up here let you swim then tell you after about the freshies in the pools. After walking back to base camp at Emma gorge  we were provided with a lovely morning tea and a rest. Then loaded  onto the air conditioned 4WD bus and we returned to  El Questro.
