Penong
Yesterday we left lovely Streaky Bay as we continue our journey westward.
Today’s planned destination was Penong SA.
But first we needed to stop at Ceduna to replenish our supplies and fuel
The Ceduna foreshore area
So after a quick shop and a bit of lunch at the Ceduna Bakery
We were back on the road.
Not a lot to see really,
just roads, trees and fields, but fortunately a lovely sunny day
We arrived at Penong Caravan park (camp kitchen above) early afternoon and took the opportunity to do some chores
I did a bit of Baking , Banana Muffins
(first time using the caravan oven)
a load or two of washing and some other sorting in the car
and van that we needed to do
And then wandered down to the Penong Historic windmill park
The idea for the windmill museum started quite a few years ago when two local couples decided that the town needed a Tourist attraction. At the time the township was already known at the “town of Windmills” due to a number of old windmills located as you enter the township from the Ceduna side.
With the recent changes to solar generated water pumps , some of the windmills had started to disappear and these ingenious couples decided that a Windmill Museum was the way to attract tourists.
The museum is located across the road from the caravan park.
The first windmill was erected in 2015. At the time of the official opening in 2016 there were 19 windmills of various sizes and shapes. The largest being the Comet, at 35+ foot across.
The plan is to continue to gather as many ‘Iconic Australian” windmills as possible, so these majestic parts of Australia’s history do not totally disappear.
Until the next blog
